I'm sure you've heard the saying that "It takes 21 days to make a habit," right? Or, "It takes 90 days to change your life." What if you committed to living your last 30 days of this year as you are committing to living the first 30 days of the new year? What if instead of a downhill slide into 2019, you are ramping up!?
Most of the time, around the holidays each year, people "fall off the wagon." They give in to all the goodies and treats and magically no longer have time to exercise by about Thanksgiving. That means for 6 weeks or longer, they are sabotaging their own health until the New Year. Because you know, January 1 is a magical date that all healthy habits begin, right? Well, at least temporarily.
I preface this by saying "people" fall off the wagon, because that has never been the case for me. I'm a sugar addict (in recovery now), so MY wagon (if it were ever hitched in the first place), fell off LONG before Thanksgiving. It probably took a downward spiral around September, when all the pumpkin spice lattes are released into the world. See, I was not always that girl in the black bathing suit in this picture. I was introverted (and still am, btw), and SCARED TO DEATH that I would always be poor. I grew up with TONS of love, LOTS of Jesus, but no money. Both of my parents worked very hard in their self-employment jobs (minister and piano teacher), but always struggled to make ends meet until much later in life... like after we kids were grown and gone. I got married to my high school sweetheart straight out of college and we were in the same boat: in ministry and no money. We also had the added burden of student loans and car loans, with no end in sight.
Later, my dear husband worked 3-4 jobs at a time in small town, Kentucky, and I took on a seasonal job after getting my masters degree and being "overqualified" for everything. We took our youngest son to the sitter each day that I worked, and barely broke even on bills. I spent more days than not, crying in my car on the way to work, wishing things could change. I would stand at the checkout at Walmart with my cart full of groceries, covering that little plastic card with one hand, so no one would see we were using food stamps.
We were going through the motions.
Something HAD to give.
I saw a photo like this on social. The girl who is fourth from the left was going on cruises, saving for her children's college funds, and KILLING some at-home workouts in her basement as a cancer survivor. HOW was she doing it?? I HAD to find out.
