Have you ever had an epic weekend? Like a full on dumpster full of chicken wings soaked in whisky bbq sauce weekend. A big 'ol steak with some lobster mac 'n cheese weekend. Your drink of choice with some ribs and fries weekend. YES. This was me over the holidays. I ate and ate, and ate. I ate cookies and chocolate and peanut butter. I ate like there was no tomorrow.
When it was over, I felt slow. I felt fat. I felt like crap. I told Rachel I wouldn't mind trying the 3 Day Refresh after the holidays were over to quickly shed the holiday bloaty blues. Now if you know my wife, she gets all excited when those little green and white Beachbody boxes come in the mail. I mean like, really excited. Dude, it's just a box. My epic weekend was over, and it was Monday morning...the worst time of the week.
I opened the box and saw all of these little packets of powder. "Aw how cute. Supplements for my food." I thought, foolishly. Little did I know that my battle with the refresh was about to begin. Those little packets were to sustain me for 3 whole days. Say, wha?
Then I had to go through the horror of my before pictures.
Not too bad, right?
So let's get down to my battle with the 3 Day Refresh. If there is one thing that a man doesn't like messed with, it's his food. The contents of the little green and white box would control my life for the next 3 days. So Monday morning everything was going smoothly until about lunch time. I opened my lunch bag, which had been carefully packed by my wife. All that was in there was half of a green pepper, a medium sized apple, and a little bit of almond butter. Oh, and something called Vanilla Fresh Shake (a packet). So I ate all of that stuff and drank my shake, and I was full (to my surprise).
The first bomb didn't really hit me until dinner. I am big on dinner. I usually work very hard all day, and my lunch is on the smaller side. So I usually make my bigger meal dinner. So Monday night's dinner was one little plate of grilled veggies, a cup of broth, and another vanilla fresh shake. I honestly thought I might die. I ate it, and I felt okay. Enough to get me through to day 2.
Tuesday went by without much of a problem. I ate pretty much the same things, except I had this really tasty salad for dinner with this citrus dressing. I survived Tuesday without much of a problem, and I was very busy at work that day which may have helped.
Then Wednesday came. I had had enough. Enough of the stupid little green and white box telling me what to do. Wednesday I learned what self-control really means. In the cafeteria where I work, they had apple pie. I FREAKING LOVE apple pie. But I passed and ate my peppers, apple, and almond butter. Oh! Did I also mention that you have to drink a literal ton of water? Yeah...makes for a social workday with all those trips up and down the hall to the restroom. Anyway, Wednesday nights at church they feed everyone. Last night was no exception. They had soups and sandwiches, which is easy for me to resist. But that dessert table...oh crap. They had apple pie and peanut butter fudge. Rachel even had some of the fudge to rub it in my face. I held my ground. It was the end of day 3 and the battle for my refresh RAGED.
I woke up this morning (Day 4), and I felt honestly tremendous. I felt like superman. Like I could do one of Shaun T's workouts without stopping every couple minutes to breathe.
Whether or not I will do the refresh again remains to be seen. But I can tell you, if you want to get fit or get healthy...it's worth the battle. Yes it's hard, but many things that are worth doing are hard. If you think you're tough enough, I dare you to try the 3 Day Refresh.
From one man to another.
The last time I did the 3-Day Refresh, I felt obligated to tell you what NOT to do, because I felt that even though I had great results, my experience could have been better through those three days if I had prepared myself for success. You can read about my first go-around here.
This time, I planned ahead, still got great results, and I FELT so much better through the process.
So, what IS the 3-Day Refresh? It's 3-day program of specially formulated shakes, easy-to-prepare clean meals, and healthy snacks has been scientifically designed to help you break the cycle of bad eating habits, lose weight, detoxify your body, and dramatically improve the way you feel—without starving. This is KEY for someone like me who likes to EAT all the time!!!
You can watch a short video about it here.
I planned to do this Refresh beginning the Monday after Thanksgiving. With traveling, eating amazing food, and just begin out of routine, I figured I would need something to jumpstart me back onto the portion control bandwagon. Our Thanksgiving menu was filled completely with clean recipes, but I did indulge in slightly bigger portions of stuffing (Mmmm...), sweet potato casserole (which tasted like pumpkin pie, not gonna lie), clean pumpkin pie, and a glass or two of wine. So, needless to say, too many carbs for a girl who didn't run as much as usual, ok, didn't run at all that week. ;) I was ready to Refresh.
Each day of the Refresh had this schedule:
What made it better this time around:
So, how did it go? Well, for many reason, we do not own a scale in our home. I always take BEFORE and AFTER pictures to note my progress. I think the results are pretty good. While it may not LOOK like a huge difference, I FEEL so much BETTER than before I started. I am ready to go into the holiday season and I set myself for success. The bloat is gone, and even my husband wants to do it after Christmas!

So the 3-Day Refresh SOUNDS like a great idea, right?
Yeah, that's what I thought, too.
See, I knew I would be going on a 4-day leadership retreat to Destin, Florida, that I had earned as a coach. I was excited to get away, but I planned on giving myself come "cheats" and doing the Refresh when I returned home. Sounds perfect, right?
During the trip, I ate well for meals, had my Shakeology and coffee for breakfast each day, and then grilled chicken on salad for lunches. Dinners were filled with yummy clean eats. It really was a perfect meal situation for a bunch of women who strive to model a healthy lifestyle.
The problem came when I ate WAY too many organic cashews throughout the day, and the night-time snacks were birthday cake, s'mores over the fire, and more celebratory cake on the last night. Mmmm...chocolate fudge cake!
So, needless to say, it was NOT 21-Day Fix portion-control-approved. I was ready to Refresh.
Here you will find my How-To Guide to Ruining Your Refresh:
I have made plenty of mistakes so that you don't have to. But, if you want to ruin your experience, take notes:
TOP 10 TIPS to RUIN the 3-DAY REFRESH:
1. Be sure to have a severe depletion of sleep before beginning the 3-Day Refresh.
2. Travel a lot and have motion sickness the day before you start.
3. Do not have your house prepared ahead of time.
4. Go shopping for the 3-Day Refresh meal items on an empty stomach.
5. Build your coffee intake to at least 4 cups/day before cutting it out completely on the Refresh.
6. Find your perfect Shakeology flavor with ingredients not allowed on the Refresh and get used to that. It will help when you have to drink it plain with water.
7. Do the Refresh while working an early morning job, getting up at 4:30am, and therefore, not getting more than 6 hours/night (after not getting any the previous four days).
8. Schedule your Refresh over a Wednesday night while they are serving breakfast for dinner at church (or whatever your favorite menu is).
9. Make the Fiber Sweep drink while at work, make sure to take a selfie, set it down, and then forget about it and watch it congeal.
10. Plan a long run the day after the Refresh is over.
Now, what did I ACTUALLY do on this 3-Day cleanse? Did it work? Keep reading.
Breakfast consisted of my chocolate vegan Shakeology blended with 1/2 banana and ice. Not my favorite, but it worked. Missed my coffee. I had my tea and Fiber Sweep, and snack, then Vanilla Fresh shaken with ice water, fruit, and veggies with hummus for my lunch. YUM. Lunch rocks on the Refresh. Dinner was another Vanilla Fresh, organic veggie broth, water, and veggie stir-fry. I made this so I could have the veggies, and the family could have the full dinner with chicken and rice. SUPER good. My biggest problem on Day 1 was the AWFUL headache I got that evening, likely from crazy caffeine withdrawal. Remember, 3-4 large cups/day? Yeah.
The meals were very much the same, except for dinner. Dinnertime I made a spinach salad because it seemed like it made a LOT of food. And it did. So much that I couldn't finish it all! This was church night and I was wishing for that breakfast food instead, but I really WAS full from my dinner. Day 2 I was just plum tired. I woke up tired and went to bed tired. I attribute this to my own failure to allow for at least 7-8 hours of sleep each night.
I felt like the choo-choo train...I think I can, I think I can. I DO LOVE a challenge, and I wasn't about to quit...no matter how much I wanted coffee and my regular shakeology and an apple and almonds for a snack. I stuck to the plan and decided to make an amazing dinner for myself: cucumber and tomato salad! This recipe ROCKS and I am excited to make it for the family! Day 3 nighttime I was craving junk foods, but I drank my water instead. It's hard to make the right choices and remain self-disciplined, but as you will see below...it was worth it!
A lot of people on social media have been asking for the Cucumber Tomato Salad Recipe. Because I love you all, I am sharing it with you. For more amazing Refresh recipes, you can get your own 3-Day Refresh here.
On to the results!
Disclaimer: I do not own a scale. I know that most people lose about 3-5 pounds on the Refresh, and I know of a few people who have lost as much as 10 pounds over these 3 days! Amazing, right? My proof has to be in the pics. You be the judge. Was it worth it? I think so.
